For Part 2 of our exploration of Britishness for Duffer’s Japanese marketing campaign we were influenced by the youth culture photography of Gavin Lewis & Janette Beckman between 1977-1983.
The collection of donkey jackets, duffle coats with tight checked shirts & braces also referenced classic films such as Quadrophenia, Scum, and Brighton Rock, and so we formed a gang and headed down to the South Coast. We stayed and shot at The Birling Gap Hotel, a wonderfully shabby establishment still living in that golden era but teetering on the slowly eroding cliff top. This slightly menacing environment and the bleak and haunting landscape of Beachy Head provided the perfect backdrop for the gang, each of them escaping the rat race with a rebellious swagger.
