We first met Nick in 2011 and we were instantly struck, not only by his beautiful photography, but by his passion for every subject that he embraced. One subject was his documentation of Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano (LAB), one of the world’s oldest surviving airlines currently under threat of closure and with its downed fleet of aircraft slowly crumbling away. We joined Nick, editor & producer Lu Bowan and Bolivian writer Amaru Villanueva Rance to help tell the remarkable story of LAB. We decided to present Nick’s contemporary photographic studies in a hard-back, cloth-bound book with the cover material based on the colour of its airline seats, and then also showcase, in a separate smaller publication, the archival material that Nick had collected from his numerous visits there which included staff photos from the airlines heydays, vintage design ephemera and hand cut rubylith graphics that would have adorned the planes. We printed the former with high-end production values and the latter using the more lo-fi risographic printing technique, binding the two together and tipping in a cover image and an original LAB airline ticket into each book. The resulting publication was selected as one of Time magazines top photography books of 2013.
